The first workshop of the 2025 Text Mining and Digital Transformation Service Industry-Academia Alliance focused on the Tarflow Beginner Workshop, introducing and demonstrating one of the alliance’s core technologies—a text analysis workflow platform. The event was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation. Three teaching assistants (two onsite, one online) were present to support hands-on activities and assist with problem-solving, providing participants with a close-up experience of the platform’s functions.

The event began with opening remarks from Professor San-Yih Hwang, the Alliance Program Director. As the first workshop of 2025, this session marked the beginning of a new year of alliance activities. Some new members were attending an alliance event for the first time, so the workshop started with the basics and gradually guided participants in learning to operate the text mining platform, aiming to empower them to apply it in their own research or topic analyses.

Following the opening, PhD candidate Chia-Ming Chang, a member of the alliance team, led participants through three key components: data preprocessing, word relationships, and basic sentiment analysis. He first explained the fundamental principles of text analysis to help participants build foundational understanding. This was followed by practical, hands-on exercises using a task-based learning approach to deepen participants’ comprehension and application of the text analysis process. During the exercises, participants worked directly with the Tarflow platform—from data cleaning to sentiment classification—completing a full analysis workflow step by step. Teaching assistants provided real-time support, greatly enhancing the learning experience.

At the end of the session, the alliance provided an open discussion period, allowing members to share their experiences, offer feedback, and exchange ideas for practical applications. This helped lay the groundwork for future advanced workshops. The content of this introductory workshop will also be compiled into instructional videos, allowing existing members to review and new members to preview the material in advance.

As the alliance enters its fourth year of operation, 2025 will continue to promote industry-academic collaboration and digital transformation. In addition to the workshop series, upcoming activities include technical workshops, international exchanges, and forum lectures. The next major event will be a co-hosted forum in late June, followed by an advanced Tarflow workshop planned for September. Members are encouraged to participate actively.
